Nagpur: After unbearably hot conditions last week, the weather across Maharashtra took a turn for the better over the weekend, and these comparatively bearable fortunes may well continue this week as well.
Since the middle of last week, a trough has made itself comfortable between Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, resulting in wet weather over the Maharashtra subdivisions. Such troughs are essentially elongated areas of low pressure, whose presence brings together moisture and creates instability in the atmosphere, leading to the formation of rain clouds.
Now, another trough running from Interior Maharashtra to Interior Karnataka that made an appearance over the weekend is likely to exacerbate the situation.
These systems, combined with incoming moisture flows, will result in light isolated or scattered rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning over Vidarbha, Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada during the next five days, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Hailstorm activity is also to be expected in isolated parts of Vidarbha on Tuesday and Wednesday (April 25-26), and Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada until Thursday (April 27).
The Regional Met Centre in Mumbai adds that Konkan and Goa could be in for isolated rains between Wednesday and Friday (April 26-28) as well. Therefore, Mumbai can also expect cloudy conditions and some thundershowers over the next three days, especially during the afternoon and evening hours.
On the flip side, the IMD expects no heatwave conditions in any parts of Maharashtra for the next seven days.
Rainfall alerts over Maharashtra
Given the rainfall and hailstorm forecasts, the IMD has issued orange alerts over Marathwada and Vidarbha until Friday, so as to urge locals to ‘be prepared’ for the inclement weather. The alert levels will be demoted to a yellow watch (meaning ‘be updated’) in the subsequent days.
Madhya Maharashtra will retain a yellow watch throughout the week, with Konkan and Goa joining the yellow bandwagon on Thursday.
District-level orange alerts have been issued over Gondia, Gadchiroli and Chandrapur for today, with Bhandara, Nagpur, Wardha, Beed and Osmanabad joining them on Wednesday.
On Thursday, orange alerts will take over Nashik, Ahmednagar, Pune, Satara, Aurangabad, Jalana, Parbhani, Hingoli, Amravati and Buldhana due to the possibility of heavy rains.
Meanwhile, thundershowers, hail and gusty winds have been impacting parts of Maharashtra since last week, with reports for stormy conditions blowing off roofs and lightning strikes in multiple locations emerging from the eastern half of the state.
Owing to these erratic yet persistent rain spells across Maharashtra this month, the west-central has registered 11.70 mm of rain between April 1 and 24 — 155% more than its average for the period.
