Nagpur: It could aptly be termed an abysmal situation! Also a question mark on investigation style on the part of the Police Department! Maharashtra police have recorded a low conviction rate at 55.36 percent in 2021, a slight dip from 58.95 per cent in 2020, in Indian Penal Code (IPC) cases. The Nagpur City police ranked sixth with 51.63 percent conviction rate.
According to data, the Mira Bhayander Vasai Virar (MBVV) Police topped the tally among the Police Commissionerates while Ratnagiri police was first among the District police units in the State. Conviction rate is the number of cases per hundred in which the court has held the accused guilty and awarded punishment.
The statistics further revealed that in 1996, the conviction rate of Maharashtra was at 18.8 per cent and dropped to 11.6 per cent in 2006 and further dipped to 8.2 per cent in 2011. The improvement in the conviction rate was the impact of a series of measures launched by the State police during the tenure of former DGP Sanjeev Dayal (2012 to 2015) and continued by his successors.
According to statistics of Maharashtra Police, MBVV Commissionerate which was formed in 2020, has recorded the highest 89.63 percent conviction rate in IPC cases while Amravati City police ranked second with 58.48 % conviction rate. ADG Sadanand Date is the Police Commissioner of MBVV police while DIG Dr Aarti Singh is leading the Amravati City police. Navi Mumbai police ranked third with 54.74% conviction rate, Thane stood fourth (54.08%), Mumbai fifth (52.14 %), Nagpur ranked sixth (51.63%), Pimpri Chinchwad was at seventh place (43.22%), Pune ranked eighth (41.72%), Solapur City police stood ninth (32.91%), Aurangabad ranked tenth (32.08%) and Nashik City police ranked eleventh for recording worst conviction rate of 18.17%.
Among the eight police ranges, Thane police range has secured highest 77.95 percent conviction rate followed by Nagpur Range (63.91%), Amravati Range (63.47%), Nasik Range (59.19%), Kolhapur Range (53.58%), Nanded Range (38.62%) and Gadchiroli Range (32.17%). Ratnagiri district police topped the chart among the District police units with 79.70 percent conviction rate while Beed police recorded 20.65 per cent conviction rate which is the worst in the State in 2021.
With 88.85 per cent detection rate, Amravati City police ranked first among the police commissionerates of Maharashtra police. Aurangabad city police ranked second with 85.30 per cent detection rate, followed by Mumbai police with 82.08 per cent detection rate, Nagpur city police with 77.31 per cent detection rate and Mira Bhayander with 76.08 per cent detection rate. Pune city police recorded the worst 59.02 per cent detection rate in the chart.
