The Bidar police in Karnataka have booked nine people for allegedly trespassing into the Mahmud Gawan madrassa, a heritage site and performing puja during the Dussehra festivities yesterday.

“Members of the Muslim community staged a protest and the situation is under control,” says Additional SP Mahesh Meghannavar.

A mob that was part of a Dussehra procession in Bidar allegedly broke into the heritage madrassa on Wednesday night, shouted slogans and performed a puja in a corner of the building.

Built-in the 1460s, the Mahmud Gawan Madrassa in Bidar is a designated heritage site under the Archeological Survey of India. The structure is also listed among monuments of national importance.

The mob broke the lock of the madrasa and entered it, the police said.
