Nagpur: The chants of “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” and “Vande Mataram” reverberated through major streets of Nagpur on Sunday as thousands of citizens came together for a grand Tiranga Rally organised by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) under the Union Government’s Har Ghar Tiranga campaign.
Held to mark August 9, Kranti Din (Quit India Movement Day), the rally transformed the city’s streets into a sea of patriotism, with citizens carrying the national flag and participating in various cultural and patriotic activities.

The rally began at the statue of Baji Prabhu Deshpande at Ramnagar Square, where Nagpur Mayor Neeta Thakre formally flagged off the procession.
From Ramnagar, the rally proceeded through Laxmi Bhuvan Square towards Shankar Nagar Square, drawing enthusiastic participation from citizens along the route.
The biggest attraction of the rally was a 700-metre-long Tricolour, which was carried by citizens in a disciplined formation. The massive national flag stretched across a considerable portion of the route, creating a striking visual spectacle and becoming the centrepiece of the event.
Ex-servicemen, firefighters and students join procession
The rally had been carefully organised to showcase India’s patriotic spirit and diversity. Citizens carrying the 700-metre Tricolour led the procession, followed by ex-servicemen, fire brigade personnel and members of the nuisance detection squad.
Students from Valmiki Nagar Hindi Secondary School, Vivekanand Hindi Secondary School and Shivangaon Marathi School also participated, many dressed in colourful traditional and cultural attire.
Traditional cultural dances presented by the students added colour to the procession, while a special display of weapon skills by members of Guru Tegh Bahadur Singh Sahib Gurudwara was another major attraction.
Young skaters Athang Rajguru and Umang Nitanvare also drew attention as they led part of the rally while carrying the Tricolour.
The event witnessed the participation of Maharashtra Revenue Minister and Nagpur Guardian Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, Mayor Neeta Thakre, MLA Krishna Khopde, MLC Prof Sanjay Bhende, Safai Karmachari Commission chairman Shersingh Dagor, Deputy Mayor Leela Hathibed, Standing Committee chairperson Shivani Dani Vakhare, ruling party leader Narendra ‘Balya’ Borkar, Transport Committee chairperson Mangala Khekare, Health Special Committee chairperson Manisha Atkare, Sports Special Committee chairperson Darshani Dhawad, Water Supply Special Committee chairperson Divya Dhurde, Dharampeth Zone chairperson Dhanashree Deshpande and Laxmi Nagar Zone chairperson Tara Yadav.
Several corporators and former public representatives, including Pooja Pathak, Virendra Kukreja, Yogesh Pachpor, Sunil Hiranwar, Sandeep Jadhav, Vijay Hole, Shrikant Aglawe, Ritesh Gawande, Vishnu Changde, Pradeep Pohane, former MLA Sudhakar Kohale and former mayor Dayashankar Tiwari, also participated.
Senior civic officials, including Additional Municipal Commissioner Milind Meshram, Assistant Commissioner Rajkumar Meshram, Education Officer Vandana Mahajan, Sports Officer Dr Piyush Ambulkar, Deputy Education Officer Subhash Upase and NDS squad chief Veersen Tambe, were also present along with a large number of citizens.
Speaking on the occasion, Mayor Neeta Thakre said the rally had been organised to help the younger generation understand the significance of India’s freedom and develop a sense of responsibility and service towards the nation.
She paid tribute to the patriots who sacrificed their lives during India’s freedom struggle and expressed appreciation for the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
She said events such as the Tiranga Rally provide an opportunity for citizens, particularly youngsters, to connect with the country’s history and the sacrifices made for independence.
August 9 and Nagpur’s role in freedom struggle
Former mayor Dayashankar Tiwari spoke about the historical importance of August 9, observed as Kranti Din, and recalled the events surrounding the Quit India Movement launched by Mahatma Gandhi.
He explained the historical significance of the movement and highlighted how its spirit reached Nagpur, inspiring people in the city to participate in the freedom struggle.
With the giant Tricolour moving through Nagpur’s streets amid patriotic slogans, cultural performances and participation from citizens across age groups, the NMC-organised rally turned into a major public celebration of national pride and remembrance.
