4-phase poll schedule for 192 Nagar Parishads, 20 Nagar Panchayats announced

Nagpur: State Election Commission (SEC) on Monday announced a four-phase schedule for elections to 192 Nagar Parishads and 20 Nagar Panchayats across the State, beginning from November 28. With the announcement of poll dates, the Code of Conduct has come into force.

The election of nine Nagar Parishads in Nagpur district will be held in the last phase i.e. on January 8, 2017. The nine Nagar Parishads in Nagpur district are Kamptee, Umrer, Katol, Kalmeshwar, Mohpa Ramtek, Narkhed, Khapa and Saoner.

According to State Election Commissioner J S Saharia, the first phase of elections to 147 Nagar Parishads and 18 Nagar panchayats will be held on November 28, another 14 Nagar Parishads will go to polls on December 14.

The third phase of polls to 20 Nagar Parishads and two Nagar Panchayats have been slated for December 18, while the voters in the remaining 11 Nagar Parishads will exercise their franchise on January 8, 2017.

Saharia said that tenure of 212 Nagar Parishads and Nagar Panchayats in the state is getting over either in December or February next year. There are total 2,485 wards comprising 4,750 seats. Of the total seats, 2,445 are reserved for women, 608 for scheduled castes and 198 for scheduled tribes, the election official said.

The Election Commissioner also said that for the first time in the history of local bodies, Presidents of 192 Nagar Parishads would be elected directly by the voters.

Counting of votes will be done on January 9, 2017.
