Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), known for its dismal working style, was in focus again when three delegations Bahujan Samaj Party, RPI (Athawale) and Bharip Bahujan Mahasangh raised the issue of proposed construction of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Smarak at Patwardhan Ground near Yashwant Stadium. A resolution to build the Smarak in memory of Architect of Indian Constitution and the Dalit icon was passed 25 years ago in 1992 by the Special Meeting of NMC. The Smarak is still see the light. This is nothing but the height of apathy on the part of the local body. And in a move to rub the salt on the wounds of followers of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, NMC plans to reserve a portion of Smarak land for setting up of a city bus stand.
On the other hand, the NMC is racing against time to complete Kavi Suresh Bhat Sabhagruh just beside Hedgewar Smruti Bhavan in Reshimbagh and installation of a giant statue of Swami Vivekanand near Ambazari overflow point. But the Dr Ambedkar Smarak has been kept in wait since the past 25 years. The delegations of Bahujan Samaj Party, RPI (Athawale) and Bharip Bahujan Mahasangh have demanded non-inclusion of subject regarding allotment of portion of Smarak land for bus stand in the agenda of next General Body Meeting of NMC to be held on June 20.
The Mayor Pravin Datke has reportedly assured the delegations that the subject will not be taken up for discussion and consideration at General Body Meeting. “The resolution passed by NMC for construction of Dr Ambedkar Smarak was during the tenure of my father the late Prabhakar Datke. I am also in favour of the Smarak,” the Mayor said.
However, the truth is that the subject of land for bus stand was brought in the NMC House with the permission of the Mayor only.
