780 million people in world exposed to unsafe drinking water: Ryan Rowe

International workshop on household water treatment and water safety held at NEERI

Nagpur Today News : In order to tackle the problem of unsafe drinking water CSIR- National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI), in association with WHO-Geneva, UNICEF-New York and The Water Institute of the University of North Carolina is organizing an International Workshop on household water treatment and safe storage and water safety plan from November 14 to 16, 2013.

Briefing the about the workshop Director of NEERI Dr. Satish Wate said that the goal of the workshop is to support countries of Asia, Africa, and other countries in addressing water quality and health through active engagement in water safety planning.

Over 120 participants of WHO, UNICEF and research institutes from 27 countries will share their expertise to tackle these problems and find out solutions and implement water plans. Group discussions on water safety plans house whole water treatment with NMC will be organized in and around Nagpur.

WHO official from Delhi Payden talked about efforts to prevent and treat childhood diarrhea. She added that only 34 % population in India have access to improved sanitation. Factors that contribute to Diarrhea is lack of sanitation and people defecting in open too is cause for diarrhea. The sewage network is too poor. Operation maintenance is also not very good. The most vulnerable are the one’s who have no access to water.

When asked about Anti-Micro biotic resistance of people, she added that the doctor’s should take note of it and not prescribe antibiotics for each and every ailment.

A Science exhibition on “Innovations in water Technology and Management” is also organized at NEERI on 15 November, 2013.
