Nagpur In a tragic and unusual incident, an unidentified youth lost his life after coming into contact with a high-voltage overhead wire at Nagpur Railway Station on Sunday afternoon.
According to officials of the Government Railway Police (GRP), the mishap occurred around 3:45 pm in the coal yard located near the Home Platform on the Santra Market side of the station. The youth, suspected to be mentally unstable, reportedly climbed atop a stationary coal-laden rake parked in the yard.
GRP Inspector Gaurav Gawande said that as the youth stood up on the wagon, he accidentally came in contact with an overhead high-tension wire carrying 25,000 volts of electricity. The powerful shock threw him off the wagon, causing him to fall beside the railway tracks.
Railway staff present in the area immediately alerted authorities, following which teams from the GRP and Railway Protection Force (RPF) rushed to the spot. The injured youth was found unconscious and was quickly shifted to a nearby hospital. However, doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Preliminary findings suggest that the deceased may have been a beggar and was not in a stable mental condition at the time of the incident. His identity remains unknown.
Railway technicians carried out necessary inspections and minor repairs to restore the power supply. Despite the incident, train operations were not disrupted.
Police have registered a case of accidental death and are making efforts to ascertain the identity of the deceased.
