Orange, Yellow alert: Rains with lightning thunders lash Nagpur on Sunday, Monday

Nagpur: Rains with lightning thunders once again lashed Nagpur on Sunday evening and also Monday morning till noon. Nagpur received 27.2 mm rainfall on Sunday, causing water-logging in low-lying areas of the city and also, on major thoroughfares.

An Orange and Yellow alert has been issued by the Meteorological Department for the next few days in Vidarbha.

According to the Weather Department, the formation of cyclones in Arabian Sea increased moisture in the upper layer of atmosphere, causing patchy rains in Vidarbha for the last couple of days. The entire Vidarbha will receive light to moderate rains in coming days due to the presence of moisture in the atmosphere. For the next one week, the weather will remain cloudy. Lightning incidents have increased dramatically during this monsoon

According to the Met Department, most of the areas in the districts of Vidarbha including Nagpur, Wardha, Bhandara, Gondia, Chandrapur, and Gadchiroli will be hit by moderate to heavy rain in the next five days from September 12 to 16. The Met Department has also issued warning for heavy rain with lightning thunders on September 12 and 13 in all the six districts.

Due to lightning on Sunday, many refrigerators, television sets and other electronic gadgets were damaged in the Omkar Nagar area. Residents of Swaraj Nagar, Railway Colony, Sadbhavna Nagar and Omkar Nagar witnessed flashes of thunderbolt in the evening with loud, cracking sound of lightning. Similar incident took place a few days ago in the Bajaj Nagar area, which also damaged electronic equipment in many houses. This increasing trend of lightning is raising concern among the citizens. The Weather Department has predicted more such lightning incidents in the coming days.
