Nagpur: To ensure safety of girls living in shelter homes across city, District Women and Child Development (WCD) Department is planning to launch series of inspection drives under the supervision of collector Ashwin Mudgal. The decision was taken in the light of recent sexual assault on 34-girls over a period of time in the government-funded Muzaffarpur shelter home. The incident came to light in a social audit conducted by the Mumbai-based Tata Institute of Social Sciences.

A review meeting in this regard has been called on August 31.

Vijay Pardeshi, district WCD officer told Nagpur Today that along with him a team comprising Health Officer, Child Rights Welfare, juvenile board, psychiatrist etc. would be visiting all private and government-run shelter homes functioning in city. Subsequently a detailed report will be further forwarded to the Commissioner of Police and Collector.”

He also informed NT that district WCD department conducts several awareness programs which seek to educate people regarding sexual exploitation. They also educate people about The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012.
