WIPO-India Summer School on intellectual property 2022 begins online in Nagpur

Nagpur: World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), Geneva; Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Intellectual Property Management (RGNIIPM), Nagpur, and Maharashtra National Law University (MNLU), Nagpur, have jointly organised online WIPO-India Summer School from May 23 to June 3, 2022.

The programme has been organised under the able guidance of Prof. (Dr) Vijender Kumar, Vice-Chancellor of MNLU, Nagpur who conveyed his best wishes for the success of the event. The welcome address was given by Dr. Ragini P Khubalkar, In-charge, DPIIT-IPR Chair professor at MNLU, Nagpur highlighted the importance of basic and advanced understanding of Intellectual Property in this digitalized world and emphasized upon role and benefits of WIPO-India Summer School.

Maria-Stella Ntamark, Associate Program Officer, WIPO Academy addressed dignitaries and welcomed all participants to the programme. She highlighted that the Summer Schools are aimed at university students, young professionals with a business and law background, and government officials whose duties may require them to have an understanding of how the international IP system functions and its intersection with other policy areas such as health, climate change, and agriculture.

Prof. (Dr) Unnat P Pandit, Controller General of Patents, Designs & Trademarks made inaugural remarks where he explained technical aspects of Intellectual Property and highlighted the challenges that the world is facing related to healthcare, climate change media and sustainable development. He further emphasized the importance of research in Intellectual Property to provide a useful solutionto the existing challenges. Nirmalya Sinha, Jt. Controller of Patents & Design, RGNIIPM made a closing remark and conveyed his wishes to the participants.

Total 72 participants are attending the WIPO-India Summer School on Intellectual Property 2022 belonging to Egypt, Tehran, South Korea, Republic of Korea, Oman and India.

The sessions for the day started with D Calab Gabriel who has given an overview of Trademark, Geographical Indication and Copyright in India where he highlighted basic elements of trademark and geographical indication along with the limitations. He further covered the changing concept of IP that is trade dress and sound mark in the contemporary era.

The next session was conducted by Anant P Shrivastava, Assistant Controller of P&D, Head, on ‘Semiconductor Integrated Circuits Layout-Design Registry’. He explained the need for protection of Integrated Circuits designs and the economic significance and impact of protection. He also clarified the procedure and duration of registration.

The last session for the day was conducted by N K Mohanty, Sr. Joint Controller of P&D on ‘Patents and Designs in India- Overview’. He explained the procedure for grant of patent along with pre-grant and post-grant opposition. He further added to his explanation grounds of opposition. He also highlighted concept of compulsory licensing.

Dr. Ragini P Khubalkar, In-charge, DPIIT-IPR Chair at MNLU, Nagpur, proposed vote of thanks. The team of Dr. Pankaj Borkar, Dy. Controller (CGPTDM) Pooja Maulikar, Dr. Bharat Suryawanshi, Asst. Controller of (CGPTDM) and Shweta Kulkarni and Dr. Anchit Verma, Research Assistants of DPIIT-IPR Chair, at MNLU, Nagpur are taking efforts for the success of the program.
