As the year draws to a close, Twitter India released their listing of the most influential tweets of 2016. While PM Narendra Modi’s demonetisation tweet hit a record 6.5 lakh tweets in 24 hours, it was Virat Kohli’s tweet supporting girlfriend Anushka Sharma that was declared the ‘Golden Tweet of 2016’.

The tweet from March 2016 had the cricketer ‘shaming’ haters for trolling his alleged girlfriend for his poor performance in the T20 match. “Shame on people for trolling @AnushkaSharma non-stop. Have some compassion. She has always only given me positivity,” Virat wrote in his post.

The tweet not only created headlines but also went viral with over 39,000 retweets and over one lakh likes. According to a report, Maya Hari, Managing Director, Twitter Southeast Asia and India, said that Virat’s tweet was the ultimate winner because he stood out as a great role model for standing up for a woman and also for her safety and defence on the social platform.

On the personal front, the lovebirds have been going strong. Virat has been seen stopping by on Anushka’s film sets, while she, on the other hand, has been seen accompanying him to social gatherings and parties.
