Nagpur: Even as uncertainty prevails over the implementation of Supreme Court’s ruling on burning of crackers which restricts burning of crackers from 8 pm to 10 pm only and also disallows crackers that cause high noise and air pollution, the National Environmental Engineering Resource Institute (CSIR-NEERI) has come up with eco-friendly solution in the form of ‘Green Crackers’. However these crackers would take some time before it hit the markets.

As crackers have remained a token of celebration in Indian ethos, be it Diwali, wedding, procession or any other such occasion, NEERI has guided the way out to celebrate without harming environment.

An emissions testing Facility, the country’s first of the sort, will be established at CSIR-NEERI headquarters for monitoring the emissions and sound.

Talking to Nagpur Today NEERI chief scientist Dr Sadhana Dayalu, head of Environmental Materials Division shared some significants facts about the newly developed Green Crackers.

She informed that these Crackers have been categorized in three categories.
1. Safe Water Releaser (SWAS)-
This type of crackers has minimum usage of Potassium Nitrate and Sulphur with consequent reduction in particulate matter (30-35%) and a matching sound intensity with commercial crackers of 105-110 dBA.
2. Safe Thermite Crackers (STAR)-
In this type of crackers the consequent reduction in particulate matter is (35-40%) and a matching sound intensity with commercial crackers of 105-110 dBA.
3. Safe Minimal Aluminium (SAFAL)-
This type of crackers has a minimum usage of Aluminium and the consequent reduction in particulate matter is (35-40%) and a matching sound intensity with commercial crackers of 110-115 dBA.

Available in flower pots, Jil Jil and atom bombs, CSIR-NEERI has submitted the formulation to Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organization for approval and these crackers will be available in next three months.
