Nagpur: The city of Nagpur witnessed a substantial increase in vehicle registrations, reaching an unprecedented high of 20.06 lakh in the year 2023.

Data obtained from the Nagpur Regional Transport Office (RTO) revealed that 74,128 new vehicles were registered during the year, averaging nearly 203 new vehicles hitting the roads every day. This surge in vehicle numbers, compared to 2022, raises concerns among traffic experts, primarily attributing the rise to an inefficient public transport system, prompting a call for immediate attention to alleviate the growing issues.

In 2023, Nagpur experienced a notable increase in new vehicle registrations compared to the previous year. The Nagpur RTO recorded 74,128 new vehicles, showcasing a daily addition of approximately 203 vehicles. In 2022, the number stood at 72,000, averaging almost 197 new vehicles per day. The majority of the new registrations, over 67%, were two-wheelers, reflecting a growing trend in this segment despite increasing prices.

Data from the State Transport Department highlighted that in the Deputy RTO East office, covering North-Central, Eastern, and Southern Nagpur, 48,605 vehicles were registered. Meanwhile, the City RTO, which predominantly covers West and South-West Nagpur, registered 24,523 vehicles. The cumulative vehicle population in the city reached 20,06,186, comprising 16.19 lakh two-wheelers, 2.10 lakh four-wheelers, and 31,386 auto-rickshaws.

Traffic experts express concern about the efficiency of public transport as a contributing factor to the surge in private vehicle ownership. Despite the presence of the Metro service, a fleet of Aapli buses, and a considerable number of auto-rickshaws, the addition of 203 new vehicles daily poses a serious threat to the existing infrastructure. Experts warn that without intervention, the city’s infrastructure may struggle to accommodate the growing vehicular load.

The rise in vehicles has led to increased traffic congestion, longer travel times on main roads such as Amravati, Wardha, Kamptee roads, Inner ring road, and Central Avenue. Additionally, the surge contributes to air pollution and an escalation in accidents, posing a risk to public safety.

Given the challenges posed by the surge in vehicle registrations, experts recommend the implementation of measures such as capping the number of vehicles per family and a significant improvement in public transport services. Addressing these issues is crucial not only to alleviate traffic congestion but also to reduce environmental impact and enhance overall road safety in Nagpur.
