Untimely rain, hailstorm leave a trail of crop destruction in Nagpur district

Nagpur: The destruction caused by the untimely rain accompanied with hailstorm is coming to the fore with reports pouring in from different areas in Nagpur District. Various crops took the brunt of the nature’s fury being witnessed since the past three days. The District Collector has directed the Agriculture Department to survey the ravaged areas and collect the damage information. The survey is going on and the preliminary assessment of exact destruction would be known in the next two days.

According to sources, Hingna Tehsil was the worst affected area due the untimely rain and bad weather. Similarly, Kalmeshwar, Saoner, Kamptee, Ramtek and other parts too suffered damages. According to Agriculture Department, the nature’s fury could have caused widespread damage in 1200 hectares of farm lands. However, the exact destruction could only be known in the next two-three days after the survey. Wheat and chana (gram) crops mainly were destroyed along with vegetables and other crops.

The sources further said that harvesting was done in 1.57 lakh hectares of farm land out of 2.33 lakh hectares according to 2015-16 planning. Sowing of wheat was done in 82,839 hectares while chana was sowed in 69554 hectares. Similarly, vegetables including chili, green vegetables, flowers were being harvested in 7775 hectares.
