An unidentified man opened fire at JNU student Umar Khalid outside Constitution Club of India. He is unhurt. The reason behind the attack is not known.

Khalid was at the venue to attend an event titled ‘Khauff Se Azaadi’, organised by an organisation named ‘United Against Hate’. Later Khalid said, “There is an atmosphere of fear in the country, and anybody who speaks against the government is threatened.”

Umar Khalid had recently claimed that the JNU had refused to unblock the process required to submit his PhD thesis. The university reportedly cited non-compliance to the punishments passed by its high level enquiry committee, in connection with the 2016 sedition row, as the reason.

Khalid, along with Kanhaiya Kumar and others, had recently been fined by the administration’s Appeals Committee, set up to review punishments given earlier in the case. Khalid was also rusticated for the next semester, despite this being his last semester.
