Tunnel work: Road from Freedom Park Square to Institute of Science to remain closed

Nagpur: To pave the way for constructing a tunnel, Nagpur Traffic Police have allowed closure of the road from Freedom Park Metro Station (Morris College Square) to Institute of Science College for one month, from March 6 to April 5, a notification said. The notification issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Shashikant Satao, said that the traffic police underlined that the work will be done day and night.

However, Maha Metro — the agency entrusted with construction of the tunnel connecting Institute of Science College to Manas Square — has sought closure of the road for two months for the work.

This order will lead to more traffic chaos at Variety Square, Zero Mile T-Point, and at Samvidhan Square, as already several roads are closed for ongoing road concretization works.

Maha Metro had said that the tunnel underneath Tekdi Road would help reduce traffic strain on areas and localities nearby having institutions like Bhavan’s School, BSNL office, Forest Department office, and Zero Mile. Maha Metro has divided the work in two packages. Under phase-I, 400m tunnel from Institute of Science to Freedom Park Metro Station would be constructed first. In phase-II, the remaining tunnel would be constructed.

The area has heavy traffic even through the night. For this, it is necessary to regulate and control the traffic during the work. Meanwhile, all vehicular traffic from Freedom Park Metro Station to Institute of Science College would be closed and will be diverted from either Variety Square or from Zero Mile T-Point.

Contractor YFC-BBG engaged in constructing the tunnel should take necessary safety measures by appointing necessary traffic security guards for smooth and safe traffic regulation, the notification stated.

This development is part of a broader initiative to enhance Nagpur’s infrastructure, funded by a generous Rs 79.67 crore grant from the Central Road Fund (CRF), as sanctioned by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari.
