Traders stop two major trains in protest against LBT in Nagpur

The traders’ agitating since past 16 days against enforcement of Local Body Tax (LBT) in place of Octroi duty by Maharashtra Government stopped two passenger trains on Wednesday (May 8) as a part of their agitation. The Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel arrested two persons in this connection.

The President of Nag Vidrabha Chamber of Commerce (NVCC) Madhusudan Agrawal and about 1000 traders stopped Howrah-Kurla (18030 Up) Shalimar Express at Diamond Crossing at D-Cabin near the Railway Station building at about 1 pm. Similarly, on the other hand, the agitating traders stopped Rameshwaram-Shahdol Special train on Delhi route triggering chaos in the Railway Administration.

The senior Railway officials, GRP, RPF personnel and local police reached the immediately after receiving information regarding stopping of trains by the traders. The traders shouted slogans against Maharashtra Government for enforcing LBT. “LBT Murdabad” (LBT Down Down) and “Maharashtra Government Hai Hai” (Maharashtra Government Go, Go). The police pushed the traders away from the railway tracks. However, the effect of train stopping was not seen as serious as the Shalimar Express was detained for only 3 minutes and the Rameshwaram-Shahdol Special train the two minutes and started their onward journey.

RPF personnel arrested Imran Mohd Shariq (24), a resident of Tajbagh Azad Nagar and Mohd Ashiq Mohd Ibrahim (20), resident of Timki Police Post. RPF’s Police Inspector D K Morey told the Nagpur Today that action would be taken against others for stopping the trains.
