Toddler ran over by car in Police Line Takli; ‘killer’ driver arrested


Nagpur News: A two-and-a-half year old girl was crushed under a rashly driven car in Gittikhadan police station area in the wee hours of Wednesday. The name of the deceased is Lavanya Ratnakar Durge.

Police said that Lavanya was playing in front of her house when a Maruti Esteem car (CG-04/ZP-5025) ran over her killing her on the spot. The driver, an 18-year-old-youth named Jai Vasant Jadhav, suddenly lost control of his vehicle and pushed on the accelerator instead of applying brakes, it was learnt.

According to information, Jai Vasant Jadhav, who is pursuing his Civil Engineering from a private college, took out his father’s car to take a round of the area early Wednesday morning. While applying brakes, he accidentally applied accelerator due to which he lost control of the car.


Sudden panic gripped Gittikhadan area as the news of the toddler’s death spread like wild fire. Gittikhadan police rushed to the crime scene after getting the information and took control of the situation. They performed panchanama and sent the body for post mortem at Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (Mayo Hospital).

Jai is the son of a police official Vasantrao Jadhav who is attached with Police Headquarters and is a resident of Patrigadh Police Line Takli.


The deceased Lavanya is daughter of Ratnakar Durge who owns a mutton shop, while her mother is a constable attached with Gittikhadan police station.

Jai was in a state of shock when he was taken into custody, the police said. Police have registered a case and are investigating further.

Rumours were made that the driver was a teenager; however, police rubbished all these claims and confirmed that the driver was a major.
