Nagpur: In a major haul, the Anti Corruption Bureau sleuths intercepted a goods carrier at Gondkhairi check point along Amravati Road and seized cash Rs 1 crore in old notes of Rs 1,000 and on Rs 500 on Thursday evening. The cash, hidden in chatai mats, was being smuggled into the city.

The ACB sleuths received a tip off that old notes worth crores were being smuggled into the city via Amravati Road on Thursday. SP Sanjay Darade, ordered PIs Aniruddha Puri and Dinesh Pande to keep a watch at the Gondkhairi check point with the help of police teams and witnesses.

The goods carrier arrived at the spot at 4 pm. The vehicle was taken aside but the officers found only chatai mats at first glance. The vehicle was then taken to ACB office where each box was opened in presence of witnesses. Two boxes were filled with Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 notes. The driver and cleaner gave evasive answers during the subsequent questioning. Since the amount was huge, a note counting machine was brought in to speed up the operation. The accused have been put under arrest and are being interrogated.
