Nagpur: Northern India and several other states are currently experiencing a severe heatwave. Recently, temperatures in the nation’s capital, Delhi, soared past 52 degrees Celsius. Now, reports have emerged that Nagpur has recorded a temperature exceeding 54.4 degrees Celsius.
The spike in temperatures has sparked widespread discussions and concerns. On Thursday, May 30th, Nagpur’s maximum temperature was reported to be 54.4 degrees Celsius. However, an investigation by Aaj Tak sought to verify the accuracy of this record-breaking figure.
Praveen Kumar, a scientist at the Nagpur Regional Meteorological Department, addressed the reported temperature spike. He explained that the extreme reading was due to a technical glitch in the automatic weather station. According to Kumar, the sensor loses its linearity beyond a certain capacity, causing the temperature readings to escalate suddenly after crossing 42-43 degrees Celsius. This malfunction occurred in the air temperature relative humidity index.
In response to the situation, Kumar emphasized, “It is not true that the temperature in Nagpur reached 54.4 degrees Celsius. The error originated from a faulty temperature measuring device located in Ramdaspeth, which inaccurately recorded a temperature of 56 degrees Celsius. We have since replaced the faulty equipment.”
This incident follows a similar situation in Delhi, where technical issues with weather measuring equipment led to erroneous temperature recordings. Nagpur has three automatic weather stations (AWS), and the daily data is verified through manually operated stations at the Regional Meteorological Centre. While one of the AWS showed a maximum temperature of 54.4 degrees Celsius, the accurate maximum temperature recorded in Nagpur on Thursday was 44.6 degrees Celsius.
