Students display mixed reactions during interaction with NAAC team

While some students gave vent to their anger while others lauded the Varsity

Nagpur Today: The students decided to bring it all out in the open and chose to air all their plaints for once. However, some students chose to praise the Rastrasant Tukdoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU) during the visit of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) team’s   interaction with the students on September 12, 2014.

On the third day of its visit, the NAAC team interacted with the students at Gurunanak Bhavan, Near University Campus, on Amravati Road. According to the students, the interaction went on for about an hour with no university officials present in the hall. Students were allowed to freely ask questions and give suggestions to the NAAC team.

All the members of the NAAC team, including the NAAC team Head Former Vice Chancellor A M Pathan of Karnataka Central University were present during the interaction. The students vented out their complaints and anger before the NAAC team. The students reported that they put forth their problems of basic facilities which are lacking in their in their respective departments like drinking water, sanitation, teacher’s attendance and syllabus up-gradation etc before the team.

On the other hand, there were many students who belonged to various departments, who praised the facilities, teachers and the quality of learning material and environment which they were getting in the university.

The NAAC team while interacting with the students were particularly concerned in knowing about the placement and counselling in departments, mentoring, student teachers meet, the new courses and suggestions from the students which could be conveyed to University officials.

Based on the student’s feedback, the NAAC members asked them if they get to fill up the students feedback form?

However, the students made a suggestion that the feedback form should not include the teacher’s name, which the NAAC team noted and assured the students that it would be conveyed to the university officials.

Other very sensitive queries were also made by the NAAC team which included if the OBC and SC/ST students received their scholarships on time. A lady member of the NAAC team inquired about the medical facilities available in the campus. Many students opined that they were not aware of the medical facilities available for them. A History Department student informed the gathered students that a dispensary run by the University for the students as well as employees of the university exists at Law College Campus, near GS College of Commerce.

According to some student’s sources, a lady NAAC member asked the girls, present in the auditorium, during the interaction if they faced any sexual harassment, face eve teasing or any such uncouth behavior from male students or staff in the university when they are in their colleges. The girls who were present in large numbers in the auditorium unanimously replied a ‘Big No’. The NAAC team were impressed and said that Nagpur University should be quoted as a model for the other universities.

The interaction concluded with NAAC Team thanking the students for their perspective and suggestions and assured them that it will be conveyed to the University higher-ups. The NAAC team wished the students do outstanding work in their chosen field.
