Nagpur: A birthday celebration turned into a tragedy when a couple died in a road accident after their motorcycle was hit by a speeding car in the Beltarodi area in the early hours of Wednesday.
According to police, the complainant Nitin Suresh Kalambhe (30), a resident of Aradhana Nagar in Dighori, had organised his daughter’s birthday party at Ahaan Celebration Hall on Kharbi Road. His in-laws, Vijay Bhagwan Savarkar (53) and Surekha Vijay Savarkar (48), residents of Gharkul Society in Harihar Nagar, Beltarodi, had attended the function.
After the programme concluded, the couple left for their home at around 12.30 am on April 9, 2026, riding a Passion Pro motorcycle (MH-40-X-4506).
While travelling between Besa Chowk and Purushottam Bazaar Chowk, in front of a MedPlus store within the limits of Beltarodi Police Station, a Kia Sonet car (MH-49-BW-4226) allegedly being driven at high speed in a rash and negligent manner rammed into their motorcycle from the front.
The impact left both Vijay Savarkar and his wife severely injured. The car driver abandoned the vehicle at the spot and fled from the scene.
Passers-by rushed the injured couple to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for treatment, but doctors examined them and declared both dead on arrival.
Based on the complaint lodged by Kalambhe, Beltarodi Police registered a case against the car driver under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Motor Vehicles Act.
Police have taken the accused driver, Pankaj Balkrishna Dekate (47), a resident of Chimurkar Layout in New Narsala, Hudkeshwar, into custody. Further investigation in the case is underway.
