Nagpur: Calling Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj the “first superhero for every child in Maharashtra,” actor-filmmaker Riteish Deshmukh struck an emotional chord while addressing a press conference in Nagpur on Monday during the promotion of his ambitious historical film Raja Shivaji.
Deshmukh, who has co-written, directed, and played the titular role in the film, said the overwhelming response in the first three days since its release reflects the deep connect audiences share with the legacy of Shivaji Maharaj. He described the project as the fulfilment of a decade-long dream.
“Depicting a towering historical figure like Shivaji Maharaj comes with immense responsibility. The most challenging aspect was ensuring the story remains accurate and respectful,” he said. According to Deshmukh, a strong and authentic script is the backbone of any historical film, making it easier for actors to convincingly portray iconic characters.
The film traces Shivaji Maharaj’s journey from his childhood to the defining moment of Afzal Khan’s defeat, an episode that established him as a formidable ruler. Addressing the debate around the film’s title, Deshmukh clarified that the narrative focuses on Shivaji Maharaj’s emergence as a ‘Raja,’ while his later coronation as ‘Chhatrapati’ forms a broader story beyond the film’s scope.
Featuring a star-studded ensemble including Sanjay Dutt, Abhishek Bachchan, Vidya Balan, Boman Irani, Fardeen Khan, and Salman Khan, the film stands out not just for its scale but also for the spirit behind it. Deshmukh revealed that several actors chose to be part of the project without remuneration as a mark of respect for Shivaji Maharaj.
Highlighting the decision to release the film simultaneously in Hindi and Marathi, Deshmukh said the aim was to take Shivaji Maharaj’s inspiring story beyond regional boundaries. He expressed gratitude for the positive response pouring in from audiences across the country, calling it a reaffirmation of the timeless appeal of the Maratha warrior king’s legacy.
