Russian civilian plane with over 200 on board crashes

Sinai/Nagpur: A Russian civilian plane with over 200 people on board has crashed in Sinai in Egypt. Egypt’s Prime Minister Sherif Ismail has confirmed of the crash.

A “Russian civilian plane… crashed in the central Sinai,” the office of Prime Minister Sharif Ismail said in a statement.

A senior aviation official said it was a charter flight operated by a Russian company and had on board 217 passengers and seven crew members. Communication with the aircraft was lost, he added.

According to reports, the Airbus A-321 had taken off from the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh and was on its way to the Russian city of St Petersburg.

The plane had lost contact with the aviation authorities before the crash. There were also reports that it had disappeared over Cyprus.

Most of the passengers are said to be Russian tourists.
