Nagpur News: The Guardian Minister Nitin Raut, addressing a press conference at Ravi Bhavan in Nagpur on Monday, informed media of his whirlwind tour and inspection of roads in various parts of the city. “When I, along with Municipal Commissioner Shyam Wardhane, inspected the roads in various parts of city, I found the condition nothing short of a hell. The roads are riddled with holes of all sizes, manhole covers missing. Ironically, the manhole in front of Traffic Police Office near Zero Mile was covered by a cooler. Naturally, citizens are outraged by the prevailing poor condition of roads and missing manhole covers that could pose hazard to their lives. Therefore I have directed the concerned officials to immediately cover the manholes with “Ductile Iron Covers” and find out the missing covers,” said Nitin Raut.

Similarly, Raut said, the officials have been directed to repair internal roads in every ward before the beginning of Ganeshotsav on August 29, Moreover, strict directives have been issued to make the roads that are routes of Ganesh idol immersion and all other roads in city free of holes by September 7 and September 10 respectively. A total of 286 kilometers of roads in city come under NMC apart from 43 km of National Highway, 6.6 km of State Highway, 62 km of Zilla Parishad roads,  41 km of internal Ring Roads, and 11.48 km of NIT roads that crisscross the city, said the Guardian Minister.

“According to an NMC survey carried out a month ago, the number of holes on city roads stood at 5000 and after the rains, the number has increased to more than 6000. The NIT roads are riddled with 2100 holes, NHAI roads have 95 holes, State Highways have 29 holes and the condition of Ring Roads is precarious. NMC collects the maximum taxes and the maximum roads also come under the civic body. Therefore, the responsibility of repairing the roads lies with the NMC and other agencies should also hand over the repair works to NMC itself,” Raut stated.

Raut further said that the funds available with NHAI amount to Rs 17 crore and the agencies looking after the ring roads have funds to the tune of Rs 6 crore. The NMC and NIT are capable of carrying out repair of their roads on their own.

The officials have been directed to submit their action taken reports to the Guardian Minister Nitin Raut on day-to-day basis. Similarly, a single window system for granting permission to organize Ganeshotsav would be set up in every zone of NMC. The expenditure of Rs 100 crore is likely to occur on topping of roads constructed in 2011-12 and the estimates for roads constructed in 2013-14 would be prepared afresh. The NMC has been directed to organize a workshop on making Nagpur a world class city and the presentation in this regard be made in the second week of September, Raut said.
