Punjab and Haryana HC seeks report on alleged Murthal rapes during Jat stir

India Caste ViolenceChandigarh/Nagpur: Days after allegations of women being molested during the Jat agitation, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has asked Haryana DGP and Chief Secretary to file a report in the matter. The High Court took suo motto cognizance of the issue.

Reports had emerged that women passengers were raped near Murthal in Sonipat during the Jat agitation.

The High Court has said that the victims, if any, do not need to approach police stations to register complaints and can approach the Chief Judicial Magistrate directly to register a complaint.

Meanwhile, the Haryana government has also instructed concerned officials in all districts to investigate if any such incident took place.

The Tribune had reported that women passengers were allegedly stopped on the national highway near Murthal, dragged out of their vehicles and raped. While the police dismissed the report as rumour, eyewitnesses claimed that several women were allegedly raped.
