Nagpur: In one of the costliest projects, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s Administrator Abhijeet Chaudhari on Tuesday approved Rs 874 crore for 12km-Pora river pollution abatement project. Earlier, the highest amount approved by an administrator was Rs 300 crore work order for cement concretization of roads.

NMC’s Public Health Engineering Department would soon award the work orders for the Pora River project to different contractors, media reports said.

The project is being implemented under the Central Government’s Amrut 2.0 Mission. While sanctioning the project, the govt had asked NMC to complete the entire project within three years. However, NMC has set a two-year deadline for the private contractors to execute the works.

Last year, the Central Govt had okayed the Rs 957.01 crore south sewage disposal project. Of the sanctioned amount, Central and State Governments will contribute 25% each, while NMC will have to pump in the remaining amount. Centre will disburse the funds in three instalments — 20%, 40% and 40%.

Sewerage works are to be carried out in areas in South-West Nagpur where the Pora river flows. A new sewer line for 417km will be laid — 253 km in Laxmi Nagar, Hanuman Nagar, Dhantoli zones and in some parts of Nehru Nagar zone, while 164 km in Hudkeshwar-Narsala areas.

This part of the city generates around 150 MLD sewage, most of which flows into Pora river. NMC is treating almost 75 MLD in its Bhandewadi plant. NIT too is installing STPs on Pora river to treat 40 MLD sewage.

NMC will also set up two sewage treatment plants at Chikhali with a capacity to treat 35 MLD and another at Jaitala with 10 MLD. According to NMC, the two STPs would help Pora river rid of flowing sewage.
