Nagpur: The 21-km timed Mazee Metro Nagpur Marathon 2016 was held for the second year running by Adventures and You in association with Orange City Runners Society and Saraswati Vidayalaya Alumni Association (SVAA) on Sunday morning. The winners got the prizes from chief guest Milkha Singh, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule and NMRCL chief Brajesh Dixit other dignitaries.
Over 3,500 participants took part in the event from across Vidarbha, with some runners coming even from other states. The event was conducted in four groups. Participants in all four categories — 4-km fun run, 6-km dream run, 10-km endurance run and the 21-km Orange City run — were electronically timed, making it a unique event for running enthusiasts. A special run was held for specially-abled children in association with the NGO
Race director Mitesh Rambhia said, “Winners were identified on the basis of individual time taken to cross the finish line in all categories using the latest race timing technology by Time The Race. In the presence of a legend like Milkha Singh, I can only add, follow your passion, be prepared to work hard and sacrifice, and, above all, don’t let anyone limit your dreams.”
Legendary athlete Milkha Singh, known as the ‘Flying Sikh’, graced the concluding ceremony. Addressing the runners, Singh said that fitness was everything and he still never needed a doctor because of his regular jogging. Speaking in a conversational tone with the gathering, Milkha Singh also urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to go to the grassroots and select athletes to be groomed for intensive training.
Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said that Milkha Singh had given India a name when the world thought we were a weak nation. “The country is proud of his contributions. In keeping with the wish he expressed, the Maharashtra government will provide all require facilities for sportspersons. We will ensure that like this Flying Sikh we will produce many more Flying Indians,” said the chief minister.
Race director Rambhia was assisted by Mayank Sharma, while Chandrakant Virkhare was technical advisor of the event. Anup Marar, president of SVAA, and Prashant Gurjar, secretary of Orange City Runners Society, were the administrative heads.
