Nagpur: In a major crackdown on narcotics trafficking, Nagpur police have busted an inter-state drug racket under “Operation Thunder,” exposing a well-organised ganja smuggling network operating out of the Sakkardara area.
Acting on specific intelligence, the Crime Branch Unit 4 conducted a raid at a house in Ashirwad Nagar, leading to the arrest of three accused on the spot. During the search, police seized around 4 kilograms of ganja, valued at over Rs 1 lakh, along with cash, mobile phones, and equipment used in drug distribution.
What has raised serious concern is the inter-state link of the racket. Police revealed that the arrested accused are not local residents but have connections to Hyderabad and Mumbai, indicating a broader network beyond Nagpur. Preliminary investigation suggests that the accused were planning to procure ganja from Nagpur and transport it to Telangana when the operation was foiled.
However, the crackdown is not yet complete. Two key suspects managed to escape during the raid and are believed to be carrying a significant quantity of contraband. Police have launched a manhunt to trace them and dismantle the remaining network.
The arrested accused have been identified as Mohammad Sameer Mohammad Wajiruddin, Sheikh Mohammad Sheikh Abdul, and Mohammad Akbar Baba Mohammad Sakhar. The absconding accused have been identified as Mohammad Jahangir Baba Mohammad Kadar and Ajju.
Officials have termed the operation a major success but admitted that the bust has exposed deeper concerns. Investigators are now probing both forward and backward linkages of the network to uncover suppliers, distributors, and possible local collaborators.
The development has sparked fresh questions over whether Nagpur is emerging as a key transit hub in the drug trade. Police have assured that strict action will continue against narcotics networks to curb the growing menace and safeguard the city.
