Nagpur: Over three thousand individuals have benefited from the Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s (NMC) shelter for the homeless, revealed a Right to Information (RTI) query filed by activist Abhay Kolarkar. The RTI application sheds light on various aspects, including the number of shelter homes run by NMC, funds received for running the shelters, welfare schemes and rehabilitation programmes implemented.
The RTI stated that a total of 3, 489 individuals were enrolled under the Deendayal Antoday Yojana in the period from January 1, 2020 to November 30, 2023 comprising 3,303 males and 186 females. Over 840 individuals were aged above 60 years. NMC stated that a fund of Rs 1.98 crore was received in the year 2019-20 for running the shelter homes. Out of this Rs 15.41 lakh was used and Rs 1.21 crore was returned to the Government.
In the year 2020-21, Rs 50.34 lakh was received out of which Rs 19.23 lakh was used. In the year 2021-22, Rs 5.83 lakh was received of which Rs 4.66 lakh was spent and Rs 1.93 lakh was returned. In the year 2022-23, Rs 28,33,000 was received of which Rs 25,20,368 was used and Rs 3,12,632 was returned. For the period April 1, 2023 to November 30, 2023 Rs 30,17,783 was received of which Rs 22,21,567 was used and Rs 796,016 was returned to the Government.
The civic body runs a total of six shelter homes in Nagpur located at Itwari (male), Indora (male), Sitabuldi (male and female), Bhankheda (male), Samaj Bhavan (male). The one located at Tekdi Road, near Railway Station is closed due to demolition of the Tekdi Road flyover.
The RTI reply stated that 129 individuals were provided work as painters, auto drivers, gardeners, waiters, and labourers. 249 individuals returned to their home after their family members were traced. Around 39 individuals were sent to senior citizens’ homes. Around18 individuals were sent for treatment of mental illness and 12 individuals were sent to Drug De-Addiction Centre in the period from April 2022 to December 2023.
