New Year revelry: Traffic cops to crack whip on booze driving, speed limit violators

Nagpur: “Don’t drink and die” would be the buzzword in the advisory the Nagpur Traffic Police have issued to the New Year revellers. Concerned over booze binge by bashers specifically the youths, Traffic Police said massive vehicle checking would be carried out at various places across the city from December 28 particularly on December 31. The teams of cops would crack the whip on those driving in an inebriated condition and violating prescribed speed limits and other rules.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Raj Tilak Roshan addressed a press conference and informed about various initiatives the cops would be undertaking to ensure the New Year celebration passes of peacefully.

During the special drive, action will be initiated against triple seat ride, harsh honking, rash driving etc. Barricades would be erected at all major squares and roads. The Traffic Police have observed that New Year revelry is in great magnitude on West High Court Road from Shankar Nagar to Law College Square and at Futala Lake as youngsters storm the spots in large number to celebrate the moment enthusiastically. These places will be under the special surveillance of cops.

As a precautionary measure, the city police have imposed restrictions on traffic at several vantage places. The roads leading to Futala Lake, Telangkhedi Hanuman Temple, Vayusena Nagar, Futala locality will be barred for all vehicles including bicycles and cycle rickshaws. Those coming to Futala Lake will have to park their vehicles on both sides of road from Telangkhedi Hanuman Temple to Futala Lake and the road from Futala Lake to Vayusena Nagar.

Similarly, traffic on both sides of Sitabuldi Goawari Flyover, Sakkardara Flyover, Kamal Talkies Flyover, Mehadibagh Flyover, Jaripatka Martin Nagar Flyover will be barred for all vehicles.

Police have highlighted the perils of drinking and driving and appealed all the citizens to celebrated the New Year celebration without consuming liquor, and also follow traffic rules. No triple seat ride, harsh honking, musical system, obscenity, nudity will be allowed on the roads.
