Nagpur: In a major crackdown on interstate narcotics trafficking, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) seized a massive consignment of 210 kg of ganja valued at around Rs 20 crore after intercepting a truck near Pardi in Nagpur on Saturday. Four persons were arrested in connection with the case and later taken to Mumbai for further interrogation.
Sources said the operation was carried out by the Mumbai Zonal Unit of the NCB following specific intelligence inputs about the movement of a drug-laden vehicle transporting contraband across states for large-scale distribution.
Investigations revealed that the consignment had originated from the Sambalpur region of Odisha and was being smuggled to Maharashtra through a well-organised interstate network. The ganja was cleverly concealed beneath a cargo of metal sheets in a truck bearing a West Bengal registration number plate in an attempt to evade detection.
Officials said the contraband was intended for bulk distribution across several cities in Maharashtra, including Nagpur, Amravati, Akola, Nashik, Pune and Mumbai, indicating the scale of the drug supply network operating in the region.
Acting on the intelligence tip-off, NCB officials intercepted the suspicious truck near the Pardi area and apprehended two persons identified as P. Kumar and R. Kumar. During interrogation, the duo reportedly revealed details about the supply chain and local distribution network.
Based on the leads provided during questioning, the NCB team subsequently arrested two alleged Nagpur-based distributors, identified as Patil and Varma, who were believed to be part of the larger trafficking network responsible for distributing the narcotics across Maharashtra.
The case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. Officials said further investigation is underway to trace the entire drug syndicate and identify other individuals involved in the smuggling and distribution of the contraband.
Authorities suspect that the seizure may expose a wider interstate narcotics network operating between eastern and western India, and more arrests are likely as the investigation progresses.
