A lady cop who pursued her engineering from VNIT in Nagpur has got the distinction of being the first woman SSP of Chandigarh. SSP Nilambari Vijay Jagdale took charge on Tuesday amid concern over women safety following the high-profile stalking case of Varnika Kundu and the shocking rape of a 12-year-old student on Independence Day.

While interacting with mediapersons, the 2008 batch IPS officer said, “Safety of women, children and senior citizens is my priority.”

She said providing clean and transparent police to city residents is another big challenge for her. Nilambari said she has directed all DSPs of divisions, SHOs of police stations to perform their job with honesty and in a professional manner. If anybody found indulging in wrong practices, he or she would not be spared.

To stop street crimes like snatchings, she said she would study the worst-affected areas and modus operandi of miscreants and then make a plan.

When asked if she will face new challenges being a woman officer, she replied, “I don’t think there any specific challenges before a woman officer. Male and female officers have same kind of challenges during the service period.”

The SSP said she is very strict regarding work. “For the effective implementation of law and order you have to be strict,” she said.

Jagdale has done BE from VNIT, Nagpur. She had also served as SSP at Ropar, Fazilka and Pathankot before joining UT police. She was awarded three times with commendation certificates from Punjab DGP for exemplary work during parliamentary elections in 2014, Punjab assembly election in 2017 and PPA Phillaur for taking initiatives for police training.
