Nagpur: In a significant move, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has undertaken the installation of iron safety nets on bridges over the city’s canals. This initiative aims to prevent the dumping of waste into the canals from the bridges. The safety nets are being installed on both sides of the bridges in all ten zones of the city.

On Tuesday, August 27, Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Dr. Abhijit Chaudhary inspected the safety nets installed on a canal near the Vijay Talkies railway underpass in Ward 17. He also directed that awareness messages be displayed on the nets to encourage public responsibility.

Under the guidance of Dr. Chaudhary, the NMC has identified 59 locations across the city where these safety nets are being installed on canal bridges. The project is already underway, with some zones having completed the installation while others are still in progress.

The primary goal of this initiative is to address the problem of waste being thrown into the canals from the bridges, which obstructs the flow of water. To tackle this issue, the NMC is installing sturdy iron railings with safety nets on both sides of 59 canal bridges across the city.

In Laxminagar Zone, safety nets are being installed at five locations, including Khamla Chowk and Sahakar Nagar Ghat. In Dharampeth Zone, 11 locations have been identified, including Ambazari Overflow, Yashwant Stadium Nag River, and the canal near Bhole Petrol Pump. Similarly, five locations in Hanuman Nagar Zone, including Manewada Ghat and Besa Road, are being covered.

Dhantoli Zone will have safety nets at seven locations, including Narendra Nagar Chowk and Sardar Patel Chowk Ghat Road. Nehru Nagar Zone is addressing five spots, including the canal at Jagnade Chowk. In Gandhibagh Zone, the Gangabai Ghat Bridge is among the five locations. Sataranjipura Zone has five locations, including Shantinagar Canal near Jain Temple. The Lakadganj Zone will see installations at five locations, including the Agricultural University. Ashinagar Zone will have six locations covered, including Ashok Chowk Canal, while the Mangalwari Zone is addressing five locations, including the Police Talav Chowk.

These measures are particularly important during the monsoon season to ensure the safe flow of water in rivers and canals. During the inspection, Executive Engineer (Projects) Mrs. Alpana Patne, Junior Engineer Devchand Kakde, and Assistant Civil Engineer Mr. Kanthawar were also present.
