Nagpur: In a chilling incident that has shocked Nagpur, an eight-year-old girl was brutally stabbed to death by her own father in a fit of rage over a custody dispute in the jurisdiction of Wathoda police station early Wednesday morning. The gruesome crime has once again exposed the horrific consequences of domestic discord spiralling into extreme violence.
According to police, the complainant, Kusumbai Krushnarao Shendre (71), was residing in a rented house at Plot No. 12, Sarode Nagar, Bhojar, Wathoda, along with her elder son Shekhar Krushnarao Shendre (46), younger son Umesh (45), and Shekhar’s minor daughter, Dhanashree (8). Shekhar was living separately from his wife Shubhangi due to ongoing marital disputes. Shubhangi had been repeatedly demanding custody of their daughter, but Shekhar had consistently refused, leading to frequent and bitter quarrels within the family.
Police said that on January 14, 2026, at around 5.45 am, the situation took a horrifying turn. Enraged over the issue of handing over the child to her mother, accused Shekhar Shendre allegedly attacked his daughter Dhanashree and stabbed her in the chest with a knife, causing grievous injuries. The brutal act was carried out inside the house, leaving the child bleeding profusely.
Hearing the child’s desperate cries, Kusumbai and her younger son Umesh rushed to the spot and found Dhanashree in a critical condition. They immediately took the severely injured child to Wathoda police station, from where police rushed her to a medical hospital for emergency treatment. However, despite efforts by doctors, the child succumbed to her injuries during treatment and was declared dead.
Based on the complaint lodged by the grandmother, Wathoda police registered a case under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita against the accused. The case was registered by Police Sub-Inspector Sagar Gaikwad, and the accused father has been arrested. Further investigation is underway.
The brutal killing of a minor by her own parents has sparked outrage and deep concern, raising serious questions about unchecked domestic violence, child safety within families, and the urgent need for timely intervention in custody-related disputes before they turn fatal.
