Nagpur: After announcing the reconstruction of Mumbai’s Vidhan Bhavan, the Maharashtra government has now greenlit a parallel mega redevelopment plan in Nagpur under the ambitious ₹1000 crore ‘Maha Vista’ project. The move aims to expand and modernize the state’s legislative infrastructure in the state’s winter capital.
The new Vidhan Bhavan in Nagpur’s Civil Lines area will be developed on a massive scale — increasing the current built-up area from 1.3 lakh square feet to 9 lakh square feet. Four multi-storeyed buildings will rise on the existing premises, and a separate 14-storey tower will be built adjacent to house administrative offices of the Mantralaya and legislature, connected via an underground tunnel.
Designed to accommodate the expected increase in lawmakers following the upcoming delimitation of assembly and Lok Sabha constituencies, the modern campus will feature a central hall, assembly and council chambers, a cabinet hall, and offices for ministers and political parties. The main heritage structure of Vidhan Bhavan will be preserved, ensuring architectural continuity while embracing futuristic functionality.
The blueprint was prepared by the Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation (MSIDC) and presented to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy CMs Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, and other key leaders by architects Darshini Shah and Hafeez Contractor. Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar, who is spearheading the initiative, confirmed that additional land has already been allotted for the expansion.
“The new Vidhan Bhavan will have a modern Mantralaya building, spacious cabins for ministers, and dedicated spaces for political parties. It is being designed to cater to future needs,” said Speaker Rahul Narwekar.
Darshini Shah added, “The new design, inspired by Delhi’s Central Vista, revolves around the concept of ‘Building on Legacy, Designing for the Future.’”
The 9000 sq.m. plot behind the current Vidhan Bhavan, previously housing a government press, is being transferred to the Vidhan Bhavan Secretariat. The government is also negotiating the acquisition of another strategic plot opposite the main entrance, though the current owner is reportedly demanding over ₹100 crore — exceeding its official valuation of ₹79 crore.
A senior PWD official stated that the redevelopment is essential to address space constraints, outdated infrastructure, safety issues, and inadequate public facilities.
“This project will reflect Nagpur’s stature as Maharashtra’s second capital, blending heritage with innovation,” the official said.
With Maha Vista, Nagpur is poised to become a more prominent administrative hub, symbolizing a visionary leap in Maharashtra’s legislative infrastructure.
