Nagpur: In a significant move against drug-related crimes, the Nagpur City Police, under the leadership of Commissioner Ravindra Kumar Singhal, launched ‘Operation Thunder’ as part of the “Drug-Free Nagpur” campaign. The operation aims to make Nagpur safer and free from the menace of narcotics.

The crackdown took place between midnight and 6 a.m. on October 17, 2024. Senior police officers and various teams from the Nagpur City Police targeted individuals involved in drug-related crimes from 2020 to 2024. Teams from police stations and the crime branch were assembled to track and investigate suspects previously charged under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. These teams conducted house-to-house searches, examined records, and traced the whereabouts of suspects. Some suspects were found to be deceased, others imprisoned, while some had either fled the city or vacated their residences. Special teams have been established to continue the search for absconding individuals.

During the operation, a total of 153 individuals linked to drug crimes were detained and brought to the Nagpur City Crime Branch for further investigation. Authorities checked their mobile phones to identify any potential criminal networks or links. Preventive measures were taken against them, and their details were fully updated in the police database.

Earlier this year, between January 1 and September 30, 2024, the Nagpur Police registered 197 drug-related cases, arresting 261 suspects. Narcotics worth ₹3.6 crore were seized from these suspects, including substances like marijuana, brown sugar, charas, cocaine, MD (mephedrone), doda, and bhang.
