Nagpur: In a disturbing case from Nagpur, the death of a 42-year-old police constable, initially treated as an accidental drowning, has now taken a serious turn, with investigators registering a case of abetment to suicide against his wife and her alleged partner.
The deceased, identified as Shilratna Bhimrao Belekar, was attached to Pratap Nagar Police Station and resided in Waghdara area of Isasani. Following fresh evidence that emerged during the probe, Ambazari Police Station has booked his wife Ruchika (32) and Mahesh Meshram, a school teacher, under charges related to abetment of suicide.
According to police sources, Belekar had been under severe mental distress due to ongoing marital discord. Investigators revealed that Ruchika was allegedly involved in a relationship with Mahesh for nearly two years, a fact that had come to Belekar’s knowledge, triggering frequent domestic disputes.
Police further stated that the accused woman allegedly pressured Belekar to grant a divorce and demanded a share in his property. She is also accused of subjecting him to sustained mental harassment and repeatedly instigating him to take the extreme step. Mahesh Meshram, too, is alleged to have contributed to the harassment, intensifying the constable’s psychological strain.
The sequence of events dates back to February, when Belekar visited his brother Ajay Belekar at Kamgar Colony. Shortly after leaving the residence, he went missing, prompting a complaint at Pratap Nagar Police Station. On February 24, his body was recovered from Ambazari Lake. At the time, police had registered an accidental death case.
However, a detailed investigation led by Police Sub-Inspector Avinash Nikalje uncovered crucial evidence pointing toward sustained harassment as the driving factor behind the suicide. Based on these findings, the case has now been converted into one of abetment to suicide.
Police officials confirmed that further investigation is ongoing, and additional evidence is being collected to strengthen the case. The incident has once again raised concerns over mental harassment and its devastating consequences, even among members of the police force.
