Nagpur: Dr. Ravindra Kumar Singhal, Police Commissioner of Nagpur, held a district school bus safety committee meeting to discuss the safety of school students’ transportation. The meeting, aligned with the Maharashtra Motor Vehicle (School Bus Regulation) Rules 2011, was aimed at ensuring the safe commute of school children.
With schools and colleges in Nagpur now operational, the meeting focused on various safety aspects including transportation fees, bus stops, vehicle documentation, registration certificates, fitness certificates, insurance, permits, pollution control, driving licenses, fire extinguishers, first aid kits, ownership of school buses, permit fees, and contracted school buses.
The meeting took place at 4:30 PM at the Police Bhavan, Police Commissioner Office, Civil Lines, Nagpur. Attendees included the city’s transportation manager, divisional controller MSRTC, education officers (primary/secondary), DRTO and ARTO of Nagpur East and South, and representatives from the school bus association.
Key points of discussion included:
1. Mandatory safety committees in every school.
2. Establishing policies on student safety.
3. Implementing a helpline for contact.
4. Training drivers of school buses.
5. Prohibiting bus drivers from consuming harmful substances like tobacco.
6. Raising awareness about the dangers of drugs affecting students within school premises.
7. Involving students and parents in the safety committee.
8. Providing driver information to the RTO and police traffic department.
Commissioner Dr. Singhal emphasized the responsibility of all departments to ensure the safety and well-being of students, urging stringent measures to be taken.
The meeting was attended by several senior officials, including Additional Police Commissioner (Crime) Sanjay Patil, Deputy Commissioner of Police Shashikant Satav, Regional Transport Officers Harshal Dake and Ashfaq Ahmed, Primary Education Officer Siddheshwar Kaluse, Secondary Education Officer Rohini Kumbhar, and police officers from various branches in Nagpur.
