MPDA, MCOCA rap rattled goons, curbed crime in Second Capital this year: CP Kumar

94 murders among 8000 various crimes registered in Nagpur City

Nagpur: The tough action of slapping the stringent MPDA Act and MCOCA on a record number of hardcore criminals curbed the crimes in Second Capital of State significantly, said the Commissioner of Police Amitesh Kumar while interacting with media persons on Wednesday.

The Top Cop stated that this year the stringent Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities (MPDA) Act was invoked against 63 criminals and they were sent to jail. Last year police could nab 36 criminals. No hooligan has received relief from the Advisory Board or the court. By the month of November, 90 goons have been deported. Last year the number was 43. This year 7 actions have been taken under Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act (MCOCA) while 4 are to take place in the coming days. MCOCA is also to be invoked against the interstate team which cheated by enrolling in medical college, the Commissioner of Police said.

“In the current year, around 8000 cases have been registered. These include 94 murders. There were 97 murders last year. There have been 1997 murders between 2001 and 2020. In this regard, 100 murders occurred every year occur,” said Kumar. Sharing some more details of police action throughout 2021, Kumar said, “In the month of January this year, 85 accused were arrested by registering 72 cases to stop the use of banned nylon manja. In the month of December, by registering 17 cases, 27 accused have been arrested and goods worth Rs 17.63 lakh have been seized,” the CP stated.

The Commissioner of Police further said that in Remdesevir blackmarketing, 15 cases were registered, 47 accused were arrested and 47 injections were recovered. 14 accused have been convicted in 7 cases. 3340 complaints of cyber fraud have been received. 1.69 crore has been returned to the victims by resolving 1890 cases. Under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act 1985, 318 cases have been registered and 415 accused have been arrested and the heady stuff worth Rs 2.58 crore has been seized, added Amitesh Kumar.

“Sand mafia also faced police heat as 75 cases against the gang were registered, 142 accused have been arrested and assets worth Rs 10 crore have been seized. The hazardous betel nut and kharra are now on the radar. Further action will be taken on harvesting factories and warehouses. Police have recommended cancelling the permits of 58,000 vehicles for violation of various traffic rules. There have been 245 fatal accidents this year. This year the conviction rate was 42 percent. Also, 10 police personnel have been dismissed for various irregularities. Rs. 50 lakhs have been given to the relatives of 23 personnel martyred by Covid-19 infection. Relatives of 19 personnel have also been given jobs,” summed up the Commissioner of Police.
