The elevation divides the jail premises into two halves. This has separated the prison building from one part of the jail farm. To enable the prisoners reach the other farm without any security breach, the underpass is necessary. The underpass, whose cost is yet to be calculated, will be below the 24 metre wide road to be built by Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC). It will be three-tier construction with the underpass below ground level, road at ground level and viaduct above it.
The home ministry has asked NMRCL to build a 10m high wall around the two halves of the prison farm and install barbed wire atop it. NMRCL has also been asked to erect walls on both sides of the Metro viaduct so that Metro passengers are unable to see the jail.
The plot of land handed over to NMRCL by Central Jail is 30 metre wide and 496.77 metre long.
NMRCL chief Brijesh Dixit said that chief minister Devendra Fadnavis was also of the view that Metro Rail should provide necessary security infrastructure to the jail and hence NMRCL would do the necessary construction
