Manappuram Gold heist: Wanted mastermind Subodhkant nabbed by Patna cops

Nagpur/Patna: In a major success that would cheer city police, the Special Task Force (STF) of Patna police nabbed the wanted mastermind behind Manappuram Gold heist, Jaripatka, Subodhkant alias Abhishek Singh and five others during an encounter with the gang on Friday. A team of city police has reportedly been dispatched to Patna to take custody of the mastermind.

The encounter took place in Patna’s Jalalpur locality under Rupaspur Police Station jurisdiction. Around 30 rounds were fired during the encounter. Apart from Subodhkant, his lawyer Niraj Pandey is also arrested among others. The STF of Patna police has seized nearly 20 kg gold along with a pistol, a revolver and a desi katta.

It is pertinent to recall that, in the biggest ever heist in the city, almost 30 kg of gold and Rs 3 lakh in cash were robbed from Manappuram Gold Bank in Jaripatka locality of Nagpur on September 28, 2016. The total worth of the stolen booty was stated to be around Rs 9 crore. The incident occurred around 4.30 pm when five robbers armed with desi katta (pistol) barged into the bank.

The daylight robbery had left the city cops stunned. The Crime Branch had formed teams to nab the robbers. They had tasted success in arresting Jhanvi Singh, wife of elusive Subodhkant alias Abhishek from Chistipur in Bihar. Jhanvi was arrested by Sub-Inspector Rajesh Thakur under supervision of Senior PI CM Bahadure of Jaripatka police station and the then DCP Abhinash Kumar. The two accomplices of the mastermind too were arrested by Jaripatka police from Barrackpore in West Bengal. The accused Suraj Kumar alias Sunny Singh and Dharamveer Prasad alias Baba, were taken into custody in a joint operation by Kolkata police. However, the kingpin managed to evade police net so far.

The nabbed mastermind Subodhkant and his henchmen, it is learnt were behind several bank robberies across the nation and were wanted by police of five states. The image of Subodhkant was captured in the CCTV cameras of the Manappuram office. It has been since the robbery that Crime Branch and Jaripatka police teams were repeatedly making forays to Bihar and also camping near the residence of Subodhkant’s residence.
