Nagpur: In a major development in the high-profile Mahal riot case of March 17, 2025, police have re-arrested the main accused and alleged mastermind, Faheem Khan. Following his arrest, security across the city has been significantly tightened as a precautionary measure.
The violence had erupted in Nagpur’s Mahal area over a dispute linked to Aurangzeb’s tomb, quickly escalating into a tense and volatile situation. During the unrest, then Deputy Commissioner of Police Niketan Kadam was brutally attacked and sustained serious injuries. Several other police personnel were also injured while trying to control the mob.

Investigations had earlier revealed that Faheem Khan, allegedly associated with the Minority Democratic Party (MDP), played a key role in orchestrating the violence. In response to the seriousness of the case, authorities had previously carried out demolition action against his residence.
The riot also led to the death of one injured civilian, Irfan Ansari, making the case more sensitive. Multiple FIRs were registered in connection with the incident, including one at Ganeshpeth Police Station and five at Tehsil Police Station.
So far, several accused individuals have been arrested. The probe, which was handed over to the Economic Offences Wing, initially led to the arrest of eight suspects. Recently, two minors were also taken into custody.
However, Faheem Khan had remained absconding in one of the cases, raising concerns within the police department. Acting on fresh leads, Tehsil Police finally detained him on Thursday night. He is expected to be produced before the court on Friday, where police will seek his remand for further investigation.
