NewDelhi/Nagpur: Justice TS Thakur was sworn in on Thursday as the 43rd Chief Justice of India. President Pranab Mukherjee administered the oath of office at the Rashtrapati Bhawan.

Born at Batroo in Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir on January 4 1952, Justice Thakur would have a year-long tenure before he retires in January 2017.

Elevated to the Supreme Court on November 17, 2009, Justice Thakur has the credit of taking steps to clean up the cricket administration when he delivered the verdict in the Indian Premier League spot-fixing and betting scandal in January this year.

His bench ordered constitution of the Justice RM Lodha committee that shall suggest measures to make the world’s richest Cricket body — BCCI — transparent and accountable.

His bench also ordered a CBI probe into Saradha chit fund scam that has brought much embarrassment to the Mamata Banerjee government in West Bengal. He is also hearing bail applications of the accused in the multi-crore rupee National Rural Health Mission scam, in which former Uttar Pradesh minister Babu Singh Kushwaha is an accused.

Justice Thakur, who regularly plays badminton to de-stress, started his career at his father — former governor of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh DD Thakur’s law chambers in Jammu and Kashmir.

A litigator at heart, Justice Thakur practised largely out of the Jammu and Kashmir high court.
