Journalist Booked for Revealing Rape Victim’s Identity

Gadchiroli:  A journalist in Gadchiroli has been booked by police for allegedly revealing the identity of a rape victim, triggering serious legal action under strict provisions protecting victims of sexual offences.
The case has sparked concern in media circles over responsible reporting in sensitive crime cases.

Case Registered Against Journalist

According to police, a case has been filed against Kailash Sharma, a resident of Gadchiroli, for allegedly publishing the victim’s photograph and identity on his news portal.

The action was taken after the survivor filed a complaint stating that her identity was made public, leading to social stigma and mental distress.

Violation of Legal Guidelines

Authorities stated that revealing the identity of a rape victim is a serious offence under Indian law, and also violates strict guidelines laid down by the Supreme Court.

Despite clear legal restrictions, the accused allegedly published sensitive details, which later spread widely on social media.

  • She was admitted to a government hospital for medical examination and treatment

Victim’s Allegations

  • The disclosure led to widespread circulation of her identity online

She also claimed that the act may have been influenced by pressure or motives linked to the accused in the original case.

Police have registered a case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for disclosing the identity of a sexual assault survivor.

The investigation is currently underway, and officials have reiterated that such violations will be dealt with strictly.
