Nagpur: In a shocking breach of prison security, an on-duty guard was seriously injured after being attacked by inmates inside the Nagpur Central Jail, triggering alarm within the jail administration and police department.
The incident occurred on Tuesday evening in Barrack No. 10, where a dispute broke out between two undertrial prisoners. Security personnel Sandeep Ramesh Kale rushed to the spot and attempted to defuse the situation. However, the situation escalated rapidly.
According to preliminary information, as the guard tried to escort the two inmates to a senior officer, other prisoners present at the scene turned aggressive. A group of four inmates allegedly surrounded Kale and began assaulting him.
During the attack, one of the accused reportedly struck the guard with an iron object, leaving him severely injured. Jail authorities were immediately alerted, and the injured guard was rushed for medical treatment.
Following the incident, Dhantoli Police Station registered a case against four identified inmates. They have been booked under serious charges, including assault on a public servant and obstruction of official duty.
Police have launched an investigation into the matter, while jail authorities have initiated a review of the security arrangements. The incident has raised serious concerns over how such a violent episode could occur within the confines of a high-security prison.
