Nagpur: Panic gripped the Khairi Gram Panchayat area in Kamptee Tehsil of Nagpur district on Thursday morning after a massive fire broke out at a huge scrap godown, triggering chaos and sending thick plumes of smoke across the locality. The inferno was so intense that hundreds of scrap vehicles were gutted within minutes, raising fears of losses worth crores of rupees.
According to preliminary information, the scrap warehouse reportedly belongs to Nizam Ansari, a resident of Jafar Nagar in Nagpur. The godown housed a large number of four-wheeler scrap vehicles stacked across the premises.
Local residents first noticed smoke billowing out of the godown at around 9 am. Within moments, flames spread rapidly and engulfed the entire compound, turning the area into a massive fire zone. Eyewitnesses said repeated explosions and bursting sounds were heard as vehicles caught fire one after another.
As panic spread, locals immediately alerted the police and fire department. In response, more than 10 fire tenders from Kamptee Municipal Council, Yerkheda Nagar Panchayat and Nagpur Municipal Corporation rushed to the spot to control the blaze.
Firefighters battled continuously to stop the flames from spreading further, as dense smoke covered the surrounding area. The operation continued for several hours amid fears that the fire could spread to nearby structures.
Officials said over 500 scrap cars parked inside the godown were completely destroyed in the devastating fire. The exact cause of the blaze is still unknown, though authorities suspect that highly inflammable material present inside the scrap yard intensified the fire rapidly.
Police and fire officials have launched an investigation to determine the reason behind the incident. Meanwhile, the administration has started assessing the total financial damage caused in the fire.
The incident once again highlights serious concerns regarding safety measures and fire preparedness at large scrap storage facilities operating in and around Nagpur district.
