Nagpur: The Public Works Department (PWD) has put forth a proposal for the construction of an over 800-meter long, four-lane flyover between Omkar Nagar and Mhalgi Nagar Squares in the South Nagpur Assembly constituency. This ambitious project, aimed at easing congestion and enhancing road safety, will span two Assembly constituencies: Nagpur South West, represented by Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, and South Nagpur, represented by legislator Mohan Mate.

The proposal, initiated by the World Bank division of the PWD, aims to decongest the inner ring road, facilitating smoother travel for those intending to turn towards Manewada Square and beyond. The inner ring road, once situated on the periphery of Nagpur, has transformed into a crucial arterial route as the city expanded to include areas like Dighori and Umred Road. The increasing instances of accidents caused by garbage dumpers and heavy trucks necessitate the construction of the “Manewada Flyover.”

The flyover will connect Omkar Nagar and Mhalgi Nagar Squares, benefiting commuters in both Nagpur South West and South Nagpur constituencies. The project addresses the rising traffic concerns and accidents along the inner ring road. The estimated expenditure for the Manewada Flyover is Rs 250.4 crore. The funding is proposed to be sourced from the World Bank division of the PWD.

The work order for the project is expected to be issued in early March, with a completion deadline set at 24 months from the commencement date. The selected contractor will be responsible for maintaining the flyover for the next 20 years post-receiving the completion certificate.

The flyover will have a width of 17 meters, including a one-meter divider, contributing to enhanced safety. Ramps will feature 0.5 meters anti-crash barriers on their borders, mitigating the risk of accidents. Two girders will be launched over adjacent nullahs, widening the pathway and ensuring structural stability.

A designated speed limit of 50 kilometres per hour will be imposed on the flyover to ensure safe and controlled vehicular movement. The project will incorporate clear signage and markings to guide motorists and enhance overall road safety.

The Manewada Flyover project presents a comprehensive solution to the growing traffic challenges and safety concerns along the inner ring road in Nagpur. With unique features designed for enhanced safety and smoother traffic flow, the flyover is poised to become a critical infrastructure asset, benefiting residents, businesses, and commuters in the South Nagpur region. The PWD’s commitment to addressing congestion and ensuring road safety underscores the significance of this strategic project.
