Nagpur: The famous or infamous Gandhisagar Lake, popularly called Shukrawari Talao by Nagpurians, continues to hog limelight for one grotesque reason. The lake has shockingly become a “favourite” spot for committing suicides.
The disturbing fact has got revealed through an RTI reply to a query filed by activist Abhay Kolarkar. According to RTI reply, as many as 88 persons preferred Gandhisagar Lake to end their lives by jumping into the lake in the past three years. The reasons varied from person to person for taking such extreme step.
The RTI response further said that a total of 37 persons committed suicide in the lake in the year 2016 while 30 persons chose the lake in 2017. In the year 2018 (till August 31), a total of 21 persons committed suicide by jumping into the lake. Gandhisagar Lake has gained notoriety as the only place in the city where the highest number of suicides took place.
Gandhisagar Lake comes under jurisdiction of Ganeshpeth Police Station. Whenever a body is spotted floating in the lake, Ganeshpeth police first remember only one name, Jagdish Khare, the diver, who must have pulled out umpteen number bodies of those unfortunate souls. For the sake of information, Jagdish Khare entered the Limca Book of Records for his not so laudable ‘feat’.
